Georgia’s First New Artificial Reef at the Site in 25 Years

Georgia’s offshore reef network just got a serious upgrade.
In late January 2026, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Coastal Resources Division (CRD), working alongside CCA Georgia, successfully deployed a 52-foot steel vessel known as Metalmorphosis at Artificial Reef MRY—marking the first new reef deployment at this site in more than 25 years.
The deployment took place on January 23, 2026, with CRD staff overseeing every phase of the operation. Because MRY Reef sits near naval training zones associated with Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base, the project required additional coordination to ensure the structure was placed safely and in full compliance with both federal and state regulations. It’s a reminder that offshore conservation work isn’t just about sinking steel—it’s about navigating logistics, safety, and long-term stewardship.
According to Cameron Brinton, marine biologist with CRD, MRY Reef fills a unique ecological and geographic role in Georgia’s artificial reef system.
“MRY is deeper, with clearer water than KBY, which is the only offshore artificial reef closer to the city of St. Marys,” Brinton said.
That depth and water clarity matter. Deeper reef sites often support different fish assemblages, increased vertical relief, and more stable habitat conditions—especially important as pressure on nearshore environments continues to grow. Structures like Metalmorphosis provide hard substrate where none existed before, creating opportunities for coral growth, invertebrate colonization, and ultimately stronger fish populations.
Artificial reefs aren’t instant solutions. They take time to mature, to grow life, to earn their place on a chartplotter and in the ecosystem. But projects like this—carefully planned, properly permitted, and built with long-term benefits in mind—are exactly how coastal states invest in the future of their fisheries.
