Tackling Panama’s Monster Fish at Tucan Lodge

Rumble in the Jungle

High-octane angling meets tropical paradise as a team of seasoned anglers takes on Panama’s wild waters.

The morning sun broke over the Pacific horizon as our boat roared to life, cutting through calm cobalt waters. In the distance, the lush green outline of Isla Boca Brava emerged from the dawn mist – home to the legendary Fish Tucan Lodge. My heart pounded with anticipation; I was about to embark on the fishing trip of a lifetime alongside photographer/videographer Jason Arnold, pro anglers Benny Ortiz, Mike Roy, Brandon Nelson, and Captain Juan Spragge at the helm. We had come to Panama for one reason – to battle the ocean’s baddest fish. The stage was set for absolute mayhem.

Offshore Mayhem: Yellowfin Tuna Frenzy

“Fish on!” Captain Juan’s voice thundered as a yellowfin tuna exploded on my topwater popper behind the boat. The serene morning shattered into chaos. My rod buckled and the reel screamed as a tuna made a blistering run. On either side of me, Mike and Benny whooped – they were hooked up as well. In seconds we had a triple hookup on our hands, three powerful tuna peeling line in different directions. It was all hands on deck.

Teamwork kicked in instantly. Jason dropped his camera to clear lines while Brandon and Juan jockeyed the boat to avoid tangles. My arms burned as I fought my fish, a brute that felt like a torpedo at the end of my line. Inch by inch, I gained ground, legs braced and knuckles white. Mike and Benny were locked in their own battles, each man pitting muscle and will against a rampaging tuna.

At last, after an exhausting tug-of-war, a flash of color materialized beneath the boat. Juan leaned out and sank the gaff. With a heave, we hauled my tuna over the rail. The behemoth hit the deck with a thud – easily 100 pounds of pure muscle. I collapsed back, gasping and laughing in victory. Moments later, Mike and Benny landed their tuna too, completing a hat trick of huge yellowfin. Three gleaming torpedoes on deck – what a sight. We whooped and high-fived. The adrenaline rush was unreal – and this was just our first morning.

Reef Monsters: Battling Giant Snapper

Our boat hugs a jungle-lined shore as we target the reefs for giant snapper. With arms still trembling from the tuna triumph, we turned inshore to take on Panama’s infamous reef predators. Captain Juan steered us to a volcanic outcrop nicknamed “Jurassic Park” for the monstrous cubera snapper prowling below. As the boat bobbed near foaming surf, we eagerly awaited the strike. This was Benny Ortiz’s specialty – slow-pitch jigging for reef beasts. He dropped a jig to the depths.

It didn’t take long. A vicious strike nearly wrenched the rod from my grip. “Hooked up!” I yelled. The unseen fish bulldozed toward the rocks, rod tip plunging as I held on for dear life. “Keep him out of the reef!” Juan shouted. I cranked hard, every muscle straining to turn the giant’s head. Little by little, I muscled it upward, the rod creaking under the load.

At last, a hulking shape emerged from the deep. An enormous cubera snapper broke the surface, bronze scales flashing in the sun. Juan grabbed the thrashing giant and hauled it aboard. It was a true monster – easily pushing 60 pounds. We erupted in cheers at the sight. Moments later, Benny wrestled another brute to the boat, grinning as he hoisted it for a quick photo. These cuberas were unbelievably tough adversaries. After some quick pictures, we released the snappers back to their rocky kingdom, watching them vanish with powerful kicks of their tails. “Jurassic Park” had delivered.

Roosterfish Rodeo on the Rocks

We hunted the iconic roosterfish along a palm-fringed shoreline where swells crashed into jagged rocks. We worked topwater poppers and live baits near the breaking waves. Soon enough, a violent strike sent up a geyser of spray – a roosterfish attacked Brandon’s lure. His rod bowed under the strain as the fish tore off on a blistering run, its comb-like dorsal fin cutting the surface.

Brandon fought expertly, letting the fish run then regaining line in turn, the tussle a back-and-forth dance. Moments later, my bait got crushed – I was on too. My rod jolted down as another roosterfish screamed away. These fighters didn’t have the sheer weight of a tuna or the brute force of a cubera, but they made up for it with speed and attitude. After several lightning runs, I worked my rooster toward the boat, its silver body streaked with black and that wild crest flared. Juan tailed my fish for a quick photo of its majestic fins, then we released it and watched it rocket back into the blue.

By sundown, we had caught and released several roosterfish – bucket-list catches for the crew. Every hookup brought yells of joy and rounds of high-fives. It was a true roosterfish rodeo, and we loved every minute of it.

Jungle Nights at Tucan Lodge

Howler monkeys in the canopy serve as our jungle wake-up call in paradise. Each night, weary and happy, we returned to Fish Tucan Lodge to unwind in comfort. Nestled in the jungle on Boca Brava Island, the lodge was a paradise of its own with comfortable cabins. The staff greeted us with warm smiles and ice-cold drinks, treating us like family. We’d gather on the deck to watch the sunset blaze across the Pacific in streaks of orange and purple.

Dinner was a feast of fresh local fare – often our own catch transformed into sashimi or grilled steaks – and every meal was delicious, and the service impeccable. As we ate, we relived the day’s adventures amid much laughter and good-natured ribbing. That camaraderie – a brotherhood born from shared battle – was just as satisfying as the fishing.

After dinner, we lounged under a sky full of stars, listening to distant howler monkeys and the whisper of waves on the shore. We toasted to epic fishing, new friends, and the wild wonders of Panama.

When departure day came, we knew we’d experienced something extraordinary. Fish Tucan Lodge delivered world-class fishing by day and hospitality by night. We came for the fish, but left with friendships and memories to last a lifetime. This trip wasn’t just about trophies – it was about feeling truly alive and doing what we love in a stunning, untamed place. It was one badass fishing adventure we’ll be talking about for years to come.
