The CCA Tri-Cities Chapter recently completed a successful broodstock collection effort to supply wild adult Chinook salmon to the Priest Rapids Hatchery, fulfilling Hatchery Genetic Management Plan requirements. Located along the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River, the hatchery plays a crucial role in producing over seven million Chinook smolt annually, supporting fisheries in Oregon, Washington, the Gulf of Alaska, and British Columbia.

In October, nearly 100 dedicated CCA volunteer anglers, spread across 24 boats, fished the pristine waters of the Hanford Reach. Their collective efforts resulted in the collection of 375 magnificent Chinook salmon, averaging over 15 fish per boat. These salmon were safely transported via hatchery trucks and shuttle boats at Vernita Bridge and White Bluffs.

his collection effort ensures that a significant portion of the hatchery’s production will have at least one wild parent, helping to minimize the impact of hatchery fish interbreeding with wild populations. Traditionally organized as the King of the Reach derby for the past 12 years, this year’s program shifted to a non-derby format due to new safety policies implemented by Washington State agencies.

Planning for next year’s broodstock program is already in progress, as CCA Tri-Cities Chapter remains committed to supporting sustainable fisheries and conservation efforts in the region.
