Fire, Ice, and One Badass Fishing Rod
Some people go to Iceland to soak in hot springs, photograph waterfalls, and purchase sweaters that cost approximately one boat payment.
We brought fishing rods.
Because somewhere between the volcanoes, glaciers, and weather that appears to hold a personal grudge against exposed skin, there are fish. And where there are fish, Tide Bandits will eventually show up carrying tackle and making questionable vacation decisions.
Our weapon of choice? The St. Croix Avid Trek.
We took this travel rod to the land of fire and ice, one of the most inhospitable environments we could throw at a fishing trip. We came home with a strong opinion: as far as we’re concerned, this is the best travel rod on the market.
Yes, we said it. Put it on a bumper sticker.

Iceland Did Not Order the Florida Package
Coming from South Florida, we have certain expectations about fishing. Sunshine is nice. Feeling your fingers is helpful. Wind that doesn’t attempt to remove your eyebrows is always appreciated.
Iceland has other plans.
This place looks like somebody handed a Viking a movie budget and said, “Make Earth look intimidating.”
Black volcanic rock. Cold North Atlantic water. Huge landscapes. The kind of coastline that makes you feel very small and your weather app feel deeply unqualified.
It is spectacular. It is also an excellent place to discover whether the gear you packed deserves the luggage space.
With Finnegan along, fishing was always going to be part of the adventure. You cannot take that kid somewhere surrounded by water and expect him to spend the entire trip admiring decorative moss.
Fair enough. Dad has the same problem.
A Travel Rod Worth Getting Excited About
A travel rod has a difficult assignment.
It has to pack down small enough to make the journey manageable, then assemble into something you actually want to fish with. Those are two separate jobs, and being good at the first does not automatically make a rod good at the second.
Nobody flies across an ocean hoping to make excuses for their fishing equipment.
You want to reach the water, put the sections together, and get excited about the next cast. You want a rod that belongs in your hands, even when home is thousands of miles away.
That is why we love the Avid Trek.
The appeal goes beyond getting a fishing rod onto an airplane. This is equipment you build a fishing trip around. The fact that it breaks down is the invitation. The reason you keep bringing it is how much you enjoy fishing it.
There is a big difference.

Three Pieces. Serious Intentions.
The Avid Trek uses a three-piece design, with an SCIII carbon-fiber blank and cork handle. St. Croix offers several spinning configurations and a casting option, with different lengths and powers available.
Translation: pick the version that fits your fishing instead of expecting one rod to do every job from tiny trout to something capable of towing the rental car.
That matters on a trip. Your lure, line, target species, and fishing location should help decide which model comes along.
The three-piece format makes the whole idea of bringing a proper fishing setup feel more manageable. You can plan around shorter sections instead of wrestling a full-length rod through every stage of your vacation.
For people who already travel with camera equipment, jackets, boots, and enough charging cables to operate a small submarine, that is a meaningful advantage.
Our packing philosophy is simple: there is always room for fishing gear.
Something else may have to stay home. Sorry, fourth pair of pants.
Bring Confidence. You’ll Need It.
The best thing fishing equipment can give you is confidence.
Especially somewhere unfamiliar.
At home, you know your water. You know your spots, your routines, and which questionable noise the boat makes before it becomes expensive.
Travel takes away that familiarity.
Now you are looking at new water, sorting out access, checking local rules, and trying to understand what might be swimming beyond those rocks. Meanwhile, the weather is conducting an aggressive interview with your jacket.
You have enough to think about.
That is where a rod you believe in earns its place. We want to focus on fishing, and the Avid Trek is the travel rod we want in our hands.
That endorsement comes from the way we feel about our own gear and our own trip. Iceland gave us the setting. The enthusiasm came home with us.
Along with laundry that probably deserved its own quarantine tent.

The Adventure Starts Before the First Cast
Fishing changes a vacation.
A harbor becomes a possibility. A stretch of shoreline becomes a conversation. A little opening in the schedule becomes, “We could probably get a few casts in.”
Suddenly, you are paying attention to the water differently.
That is one of the biggest reasons to own a travel rod you genuinely want to bring. It creates opportunities before you ever hook anything.
There is something ridiculously good about standing beside your kid in another country, fishing water neither of you grew up knowing.
You are figuring it out together.
The scenery might be outrageous. The temperature might be rude. Your fingers might be submitting formal complaints. But you are there, sharing something that cannot be ordered online after the trip.
A good travel rod helps make those moments possible.
For us, the Avid Trek belongs in that story.
Premium Gear Has to Earn Its Ticket
We are enthusiastic about this rod because fishing matters to us, even when the trip has plenty of other things going on.
Especially then.
If you are stealing a little fishing time between family adventures, you want to enjoy it. If you have traveled a long way to explore unfamiliar water, you want equipment you are happy you packed.
The Avid Trek earns that spot for us.
Its combination of packability, thoughtful model choices, and premium construction makes it a seriously appealing companion for anglers who refuse to leave fishing behind.
That does not mean treating it like a crowbar. Assemble the sections properly, keep everything aligned, fish within the model’s ratings, and take care of your equipment.
Badassery and basic maintenance can coexist.
Even Vikings probably checked their knots.

Our Kind of Travel Companion
We love equipment that encourages us to get out there.
Book the trip. Bring the tackle. Look at the water and wonder what lives underneath it.
Iceland delivered the kind of setting that makes an ordinary fishing outing feel enormous. The Avid Trek was the rod we brought into that adventure, and it is the one we are excited to pack again.
Would we call it the best travel rod out there?
Absolutely. That is our verdict.
For the way we travel and the way we fish, it is the rod to beat.
There are easier places to take a fishing vacation than the land of fire and ice. Places where your face stays warm and the scenery does not look capable of delivering a final boss fight.
But easy was never the whole point.
We wanted adventure. We wanted to fish. We wanted gear we were fired up to bring along.
The St. Croix Avid Trek checked that box with authority.
Pack the rod. Pack the jacket. Give the next stretch of unfamiliar water a proper look.
And leave room for a sweater.
Apparently, those things are a big deal.
